Retired Gen. Colin Powell, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, received an honorary British knighthood Wednesday from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

\ Princess Diana was cheered by hundreds of people and was handed an arm load of flowers Thursday as she left an English facility for young homeless people, her last official engagement before her self-imposed social exile. The night before, she and Prince Charles managed a rare joint appearance - kisses on each cheek - at a Christmas party for royal employees.

\ Daily Variety is reporting that Shannen Doherty is out of next season's "Beverly Hills, 90210." The show's producers had no comment, and the actress was unavailable.
