EXPRESS' WIN STREAK ENDS, 10-4

ROANOKE HAS the shots (54), but Charlotte has the goals.

\ The Roanoke Express learned Thursday night that quantity and quality are two very different things when it comes to shots on goal.

The Express set a team record with 54 shots, including 26 in the third period, against the Charlotte Checkers. The Checkers were held to 25 shots, but outscored Roanoke 10-4 in an East Coast Hockey League game.

The Express (11-12) saw its team-record winning streak end at four games.

Dominic Amodeo and Sergei Berdnikov each had three goals and two assists for Charlotte (17-9-1). The Checkers scored six times in the second period and went 4-for-5 on the power play.

Tony Szabo, who had an Express-record 12 shots on goal during the game, scored twice unassisted. Szabo has four goals in his past two games.

Charlotte broke the game open by scoring five times in a span of 5 minutes, 58 seconds in the second period.

After the first two goals, Roanoke coach Frank Anzalone replaced goalie Dan Ryder with Jim Mill. But Mill gave up three goals on the first four shots he saw.

\ ICE CHIP: Things don't get any easier for Roanoke. Thursday's game was the first of five in six nights for the Express. The grind continues tonight in Norfolk, where Roanoke faces the Hampton Roads Admirals at 7:30.
