OBIT-MARTIN, ROY ALVIS
MARTIN, Roy Alvis, 66, of Newport, died Thursday morning, December 16,
1993, at his home. Born in Ripplemead, Va., he was a son of Talma Bradley
Martin and the late Elbert Jackson Martin. Roy was a member and Past Master of
Newport Lodge No. 261 A.F. & A.M., a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II,
in the South Pacific, a member of Newport Ruritan Club and Newport Recreation
Committee and was instrumental in maintaining the Newport Community Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Jackson Martin. Surviving are
his wife, Norma Jean Godfrey Martin; a daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and
James Mitchem of Newport; his mother, Talma Martin of Pembroke; two brothers,
Curtis D. Martin of Azalia, Mich., and Herbert ("Hub") Martin of Newport;
three sisters, Patricia (Patsy) Lindsey of Hurt, Va., Loretta Smith of Newport
and Brenda Linkous of Blacksburg; also, Tio Gandini, an exchange student from
Colombia, South America, who became his other daughter. Funeral services will
be conducted Saturday, December 18, 1993, 1 p.m., in the Newport-Mt. Olivet
United Methodist Church, with the Pastor, the Rev. Alan Thorne officiating.
Burial will be in the Newport Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the
Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday evening. In lieu of
flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made to the New River
Valley Hospice, Newport Volunteer Rescue Squad, or Newport-Mt. Olivet United
Methodist Church.
