THE TIPOFF

MORE DANCE: Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys will be the headliners at Saturday's jamboree at the New River Valley Fairgrounds in Dublin. Sponsored by the New River Community College Fiddle, Banjo and Dance Club, the event will begin with jam sessions and recorded music from 5 to 6 that evening, and live performances from 6 to 10.

The Tom Barr Family Band and the Farmer's Daughters also will play. Admission is free. Prizes will be given to winners of the dance contest.

For information, call Charlie White at 674-3611 during the day or at 639-9507 after 5:30 p.m.

OPENING NIGHT: Cantata, the Children's Choir of Central Virginia, will make its performing debut tonight at 8 in Snidow Chapel of Lynchburg College. Thomas Clark-Jones directs. The choir has 23 members, boys and girls, in grades three through six.

Christmas music will be part of it, of course. Call 237-4963.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Goose Creek Symphony, a well-known band from the '70s with a distinctive, varied repertoire, will visit the Iroquois Club in Roanoke tonight. The show will start about 10:30. Tempered Steel, a classic-rock outfit, will open the bill. Tickets are $10 in advance at $12 at the door. Call 982-8979.

CHRISTMAS IN THE MOUNTAINS: The Galax Mountain Music Jamboree Christmas Special will be Saturday night at 7 at the Rex Theatre in Galax. The Catron Family, Heaven's Echoes, the Clavier Church of God Choir and the McMillan Ministries Choir will appear. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students. Proceeds will go to Save the Rex, the group that is restoring the theater.

Call 236-0668.

HOLIDAY PLAY: The Clifton Forge Players will present a one-act play, ``The Christmas Sisters,'' tonight and Saturday night at the Stonewall Theater in Clifton Forge.

It's an original work by Jeff Fitzgerald, and it tells about three rich, spoiled sisters who return to the family mansion for the annual seasonal party but fall into their old habit of bickering.

Of course, it ends well.

Tonight's show starts at 7:30, Saturday night's at 7. For info, call 862-7407.
