BASSETT RALLIES TO WIN 58-55

Brad Kaufman made five straight points to erase a 53-48 deficit and Chris Hairston sank a pair of free throws to clinch the victory as Bassett defeated Magna Vista 58-55 in high school boys' basketball Friday night.

The Bengals (3-3 overall, 3-2 Piedmont District) trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter but rallied when Kaufman made a 3-point goal and a driving layup to even the score. Kaufman had 14 points to complement Tyree Hairston, who led Bassett with 17. Art Wade added 13 points.

Magna Vista (4-1, 4-1) got off to a slow start and trailed 13-4 after the first quarter. More productive second and third quarters put the Warriors ahead entering the final period.

Marcus Toney led Magna Vista with 18 points. Mac Inge and Jermaine Simmons added 12 points each. \

Laurel Park 80

Chatham 64

CHATHAM - The Lancers (4-1, 4-1) broke open a close game with a 14-0 run over the second and third quarters and cruised past the young Cavaliers (0-5, 0-5) in a Piedmont District game.

Laurel Park led 33-31 with 1 1/2 minutes remaining in the second quarter, then scored the final eight points of the half. Darryl Wilson, who scored 10 of his 21 points in the quarter, hit a falling jumper at the buzzer to put the Lancers up 41-31. Laurel Park scored the first six points of the third quarter to lead by 16, and Chatham never threatened again.

Scott Warrick also scored 21 points for Laurel Park, and James Millner added 17.

Henri Fitzgerald had 15 points, Terrace Martin had 14 and Jeremy Clark and Derick Logan had 10 each for Chatham, which has only one returning player from last year's varsity team. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 64

Tunstall 56

DRY FORK - Chad Cobb led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points as the Cavaliers dropped the Trojans in Piedmont District play.

David Hairston added 11 points for Fieldale-Collinsville (4-1, 4-1), which led 33-22 at halftime.

Khris Law pumped in 23 for Tunstall (3-2, 3-2). Quan Breedlove and Chris Walton added 10 apiece. \

Parry McCluer 74

Wilson Memorial 36

The Fighting Blues held Wilson Memorial to nine points in the first half and cruised to their fourth victory without a loss.

Mike McElroy had 19 points and Brian Sizemore added 15 for Parry McCluer, which led 53-19 at the half. Wilson Memorial (0-5) did not have a double-figure scorer. \

Rockbridge County 80

Covington 75

LEXINGTON - Kenny Lewis scored 11 of his game-high 28 points in the third quarter, sparking the Wildcats to a come-from-behind win over the Cougars in a non-district game.

Covington (0-3) led 37-33 at halftime before Rockbridge County (3-1) rallied in the third period. Besides Lewis, Eric Early scored eight points as the Wildcats outscored the Cougars 25-13 to take a 58-50 lead into the final quarter.

Mike Chambers and Early had 13 points apiece, while Roy Hoyle added 12 and Brandon McCormick 10 for Rockbridge.

Van Rogers led the Cougars with 20, Cory Hunter had 14 and Roscie Martin 10. \

Riverheads 58

Bath County 53

GREENVILLE - The Gladiators, clinging to a 53-51 lead, hit five of six free throws in the final minute to hold off the Chargers.

Mike Wilkerson hit four 3-pointers to finish with 16 points for Riverheads (3-1), which also got 13 points and a school-record 16 blocked shots from 6-foot-9 senior James Doyle. Patrick Lennon had 15 points to lead Bath County (2-2). \

Rural Retreat 83

RURAL RETREAT - The much bigger Indians pounded the ball inside the second half to outscore the Blue Devils 51-38 and record the Hogoheegee District win in their season opener.

Rural Retreat (1-0, 1-0) delayed the start of its season after its football team made the playoffs. Three of the Indians' five basketball starters play football.

Bradley Guynn paced Rural Retreat with 19 points. Stephen Pratt had 14 pounts and 12 rebounds. Rusty Crigger muscled inside for 10 rebounds.

The Blue Devils (1-3 overall) stayed in the game behind eight 3-pointers.

\ School of Science and Math 56

Carlisle 48

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The N.C. School of Science and Math hit a couple of key free throws with a minute remaining to clinch the victory over the Chiefs in the Greensboro Country Day Tournament.

Jamaal Heyward led Science and Math with 11 points. Carlisle's Rod Mitchell led all scorers with 20 points, including five 3-pointers.

Kevin Warren added 18 points for Carlisle (1-5). \

George Wythe 64

Lebanon 58

WYTHEVILLE - Junior forward Aaron Andrews scored 15 of his game-high 24 points after halftime as the Maroons prevailed in overtime.

Andrews was 9-of-12 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and also grabbed eight rebounds for George Wythe (2-0, 1-0 Hogoheegee District). Andre Cook added 17 points for the Maroons.

Brian Sword had 21 points for Lebanon, which squandered a 28-20 halftime lead in falling to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the district. Ben Hilton added 16 points for the losers. \

Thursday's game

\ St. Maria-Goretti 96, Carlisle 44: Diamond Scott sparkled for St. Maria-Goretti, a powerhouse from Hagerstown, Md., which pounded Carlisle at the Greensboro (N.C.) Day Classic.

Scott led four players in double figures with 18 points. Aaron Milton scored 13 and Matt Semler and Phil Lane added 12 each for St. Maria-Goretti.

Carlisle (1-4) was paced by Rod Mitchell with 18 points and Paul Ford with 11. \
