FLOYD STAR, COACH EARN TOP HONORS

Lynette Nolley, who helped Floyd County to the state championship, is The Associated Press Group A girls' basketball player of the year.

Floyd County's Alan Cantrell also was named the top Group A coach in voting by a panel of sports writers.

Nolley, a 6-foot senior, averaged 15 points and seven rebounds while playing only about one half in most of Floyd County's games. She will play next year at Virginia Tech.

Nolley's joined on the All-Group A first team by Shannon Casteel of Castlewood, Powell Valley's Amber Lester, Sarah McNett of Buffalo Gap and Vicki Spevacek of George Mason.

Sophomore Melissa Cantrell of Floyd County and senior Stacy Green of George Wythe made the second team.

Casteel, a 5-5 junior, averaged 23.1 points, the highest average of anyone named to either the first or second team.

Lester, a 6-2 senior, moved up from the All-Group A second team last year. She averaged 15.6 points and 8.7 rebounds this season.

McNett, a 5-11 junior who received strong consideration for player-of-the-year honors, averaged 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals and 2.5 assists.

Spevacek, a 5-10 senior, also was a second-team selection a year ago. This season she averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Other second-team selections were Deanna Estes of Madison County, Hurley's Donna Justus and Cherita Woodson of Goochland.
