LURAY STAR LEADS A TEAM

Neil Porter, a standout two-way performer who led Luray to its first football playoff appearance, heads The Associated Press' 1993 All-Group A team.

Porter, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound senior, was chosen only at linebacker, but he was named the player of the year by a panel of sportswriters who selected the team.

Porter had 66 solo tackles, three sacks, one fumble recovery and five interceptions. Playing as a quarterback and running back, he passed for more than 3,200 yards, rushed for more than 2,300 and accounted for 82 touchdowns in four years.

Russ Bradshaw of Windsor, another four-year starter, was chosen the All-Group A quarterback. He completed 88 of 145 passes for 1,184 yards and 14 touchdowns during the regular season. He also ran for 88 yards and two scores. In his four-year career, Bradshaw was 360-of-722 for 5,201 yards with 51 touchdowns.

The running backs are Kevin Arrington of Madison County, Bobbie Cotten of Windsor and Raypheal Milton of Division 2 champion Giles.

Milton accounted for 586 yards and five touchdowns passing and 670 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

Cotten ran 152 times for 1,065 yards and 15 touchdowns and caught 12 passes for 237 yards and three scores. Arrington had 975 yards and 14 touchdowns rushing and caught 23 passes for 446 yards and six more scores. He scored 60 touchdowns in a three-year career.

The ends are Kenny Hill of Haysi and Jon Griffin of Northwood.

Hill caught 44 passes for 628 yards and 11 touchdowns. Griffin had 42 receptions for 594 yards and nine touchdowns. He had more than 1,000 all-purpose yards and all 14 of his touchdowns came on plays of more than 10 yards.

Selected on the offensive line were Will Thomas of Division 2 runner-up Lunenburg Central at center, Tommy Taliaferro of Division 1 champion Middlesex and Greg Stidham of Division 1 runner-up Appalachia at guard, and Jason Ratcliffe of Giles and Mike Morehead of Strasburg at tackle.

The kicker, promoted from last year's second team, is Shane Griffith of Grayson County. He made 15 of 17 extra-point tries and four of six field-goal attempts, with a long kick of 54 yards. His two misses were from 47 and 48 yards. Of his 39 kickoffs, 21 were not returned.

The members of the All-Group A defensive line are Joey Dayton of Lunenburg Central, Shane Cassell of Rural Retreat, John Justus of Hurley, Alonzo Goodwyn of Sussex Central and Jack Reynolds of Essex.

The linebackers are Porter, Robert Dillow of George Wythe and Chris Mabe of Appalachia. The defensive backs are Blaine Hackney of Haysi, Tim Johnson of Thomas Walker and Maurice Ackes of Middlesex.

The punter is sophomore Dris Ellis of Madison County, who averaged 46.2 yards on 16 punts with a 34-yarder his shortest.
