DALE STAR TOPS ALL-GROUP AAA

THREE TIMESLAND standouts also make the first team in state football.

Ken Oxendine ran the table when The Associated Press Group AAA football awards were handed out.

The Thomas Dale standout was named to the AP's All-Group AAA team at two different positions and was named the player of the year.

A panel of state sportswriters named the 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior a first-team linebacker and a second-team running back.

A three-year starter at linebacker and a two-year starter at tailback, Oxendine helped Thomas Dale compile a 35-4 record during three seasons and win the Central Region, Division 6 championship twice.

Oxendine, who rushed for 189 yards in an overtime loss to 1993 state champion Annandale in the Division 6 semifinals, has narrowed his college choices to Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

The AP's coach of the year is Joe Langston, who guided Norcom to a 14-0 record and the Division 5 championship, the school's first state title since integration in the 1960s.

Annandale, which won the Division 6 title with mainly underclassmen, has just one player on the first team. But in keeping with the Atoms' tradition, that player, linebacker Maurice Daniels, is one of just three juniors on the first team.

The 6-2, 210-pound Daniels already has been named a two-time district player of the year and this season was the Northern Region's defensive player of the year.

The only other juniors to be named first-team AP selections are both from GW-Danville: center John Poole and kick returner Theomone Brooks, who ran back 11 kicks for 432 yards and four touchdowns.

The quarterback is Indian River's Tony Morrison, who completed 78 of 126 passes for 1,409 yards, 20 touchdowns and three interceptions. Morrison, a 6-1, 208-pound senior who has attracted the attention of major colleges, also rushed for 375 yards. Morrison was also named to the first team as a defensive back.

The running backs are Avi Hopkins of Lee-Davis, Maury's Charles "Boom Boom" Jackson and Eddie Jones of William Fleming. Hopkins rushed for 1,891 yards in the regular season, breaking the 200-yard mark four times. Jackson rushed for 1,552 yards and scored 144 points. Jones rushed for 1,321 yards despite playing just nine games because of injuries.

The guards are Norcom's Jerronne Coleman and Larry Newcomb of Pulaski. The tackles are Joe Douglas of Lee-Davis and Hampton's Dwight Vick.
