NEWSPAPER GIVES $4,000 TO HELP PEOPLE IN CRISIS

With a $4,000 contribution from the Roanoke Times & World-News, the Good Neighbors Fund reached $77,486 Thursday.

"More than any year I can remember, the articles we've printed this season show just how precarious the livelihoods of many in our community are," said Walter Rugaber, president and publisher of the newspaper, which sponsors the fund.

"Time and again, these stories reveal how a single illness or injury can plunge a hard-working family that was getting along into a family in crisis.

"Often, it takes only a small sum to turn these crises around," Rugaber added. "That's why every contribution, large or small, can make a real difference in the life of someone in need."

On Dec. 23 last year, contributions totaled $64,026.89. Contributions will be accepted through next Thursday. Last year's total was $97,352.29.

Checks should be made payable to Good Neighbors Fund and mailed to Roanoke Times & World-News, P.O. Box 1951, Roanoke 24008.

Gifts cannot be earmarked for any particular individual or family. Gifts are tax-deductible.
