CRANWELL LED SPENDING TO KEEP JOB

A review of the 100 House of Delegates races by Virginia FREE, an independent pro-business foundation, showed that the House majority leader, Del. Richard Cranwell, D-Roanoke County, was the biggest spender.

Cranwell spent $193,655 to keep his seat, receiving 59 percent of the vote.

Republicans, who picked up six House of Delegates seats in last month's election, might have won a majority if they had not been significantly outspent by Democrats, a political analyst said.

In the party-contested elections, Democratic candidates outspent Republican candidates by $4.07 million to $2.38 million, said Larry Sabato, a University of Virginia government professor.

Spending set a record. The average spending by a major party candidate was $57,642, almost $15,000 more than two years ago. The previous record, $57,480, was set in 1989. - Associated Press
