"It's cold. It's windy and snowing," Ed Vogt of the National Weather Service office in Bristol said.
With temperatures dropping below freezing and snow showers occurring, even Roanoke drivers found unexpectedly dangerous roads.
"Today's slush has frozen over, making it very slick," Roanoke police Sgt. K.L. Wood said.
State police said all interstates and secondary roads in the area were slick and hazardous.
In outlying areas, 1 to 3 inches of snow was expected, with even more expected in the mountains, Vogt said.
While conditions in Roanoke were not nearly so extreme, most Roanoke-area residents stayed home.
"We've only seen a few minor accidents. Fortunately, a lot of people are staying off the roads tonight," Wood said.
Road crews were out all day Saturday and were expected to remain on the job through much of Sunday morning, said A.A. Sendefur with the state Transportation Department in Bristol.
No fatalities were reported, but police were handling numerous minor accidents in the region.
