JAN. CALENDAR

1 - First ride of the year

The Big Lick Hillbillies is calling its mountain bike ride at Carvins Cove on New Year's Day the ``first-ride-of-the year.'' It may be that for mountain bikers, but when the participants take off from the Cove boat dock at 12:30 p.m., the pedalers in an earlier annual event will be headed for home. That one is the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club President's New Year's Ride, which begins at 9 a.m.

Robust riders actually can take part in both rides, said Kyle Inman, leader of the mountain bike event. The president's ride begins at Hollins Kroger (U.S. 11 and Peters Creek Road) and heads 20 miles to Greenwood Restaurant in Botetourt County for breakfast. Riders can return to the starting point, or continue to more distant vistas. The leader is Mark Deardorff, 562-2740.

The mountain bike trip is the kind where you can ride about as far as you desire. It is seven miles from the starting point at the Cove boat dock to the base of Brushy Mountain, which is the easy part, Inman said. You can ride out and back, or you can continue around the Cove for a total of 23 miles. This is a fun ride, at your own pace, no competition. For more information, contact Inman, 981-1034.

3 - Archers out of the cold

January is the beginning of the indoor league season for archers. You'll find organized leagues most anywhere there is an indoor range. For Sherwood Archers, leagues will be organized Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. All you need to do is show up at the range, near Hanging Rock, and sign up for leagues that shoot Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, as well as Wednesday morning, said Steve Smith, Sherwood's vice president (345-4945). There also will be indoor trophy shoots at the range Jan. 9, 1-4 p.m., and Jan. 21, 6 to 8 p.m.

The Triangle Archers of Montgomery County will have league matches Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning Jan. 4 at Hunting Masters. Registration should be done immediately by contacting Hunting Masters, 382-1085. Triangle Archers also will have a major indoor tournament, 7 p.m., Jan. 8 at Hunting Masters.

8 - It's downhill for 30 years

The Roanoke Ski Club, celebrating its 30th season, has three trips scheduled to area resorts this month. On Jan. 8, the destination is Winterplace, in West Virginia. The leader is Walt Davenport, 989-9486 or 387-7877. Included in the $44 fee is a day lift ticket and bus transportation from Roanoke.

On Jan. 16, the club heads by bus to The Homestead. The $39 fee covers transportation, a day lift ticket and one-hour lesson. Put an additional $11 in your pocket, because if The Homestead doesn't have snow the bus will continue to Snowshoe. The leader is Cindy Zagarrigo, 366-4540 or 362-3361.

The final January journey is a weekend trip to Canaan Valley-Timberline near Davis, W.Va. The $110 fee covers two nights lodging at Deerfield Village, two days of lift tickets at Canaan and Timberline, and a party on Saturday night. The leader is Frank Cook 989-5940 or 985-2905.
