Owen was awarded the NIC Gold Medal, which honors lifelong involvement in a professional service to men's general college fraternities. The conference represents eight million members of college fraternities in the United States.
Owen has served as president of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity since 1959. He is a past president of the Fraternity Executives Association, the College Fraternity Editors Association, and a past board member of the National Interfraternity Conference. He also is the founder and past president of Fraternity Insurance Purchasing Group.
Owen lives in Charlotte, N.C., where he serves on the boards of Opera Carolina and PUSH America. He also is a trustee of the North Carolina School of the Arts and a board member of the Western Carolina Foundation.
