ROCKETS FIZZLE IN FINAL

Virginia High held Bland without a field goal in the final period and triumphed 58-39 in the final day of the Graham Holiday Classic boys' basketball round-robin tournament Thursday night.

Bland (3-4) had cut Virginia High's lead to 40-37 early in the fourth quarter, but 12 unanswered Bearcats points ended any hopes of a comeback.

Virginia High's Earl Crawford led all scorers with 13 points. Kevin King led Bland, who finished 1-2 in the tournament, with 12 points. \

Wednesday's games

\ Bland 60, Tazewell 58: At Bluefield, W.Va., Kevin King scored 22 points and led the Rockets (3-3) over the Bulldogs (4-2) in the Graham Holiday Classic round-robin event at Graham High School.

Bland led by three points late in the game. Tazewell's Wes Gentry made free throw then purposely missed the second so the Bulldogs could try for a rebound basket. However, Bland grabbed the rebound and the victory.

Shannon Havens added 13 points for Bland.

Rick Snapp scored 16 points and Mike Hairston added 15 for Tazewell.

\ Northwood 68, Christiansburg 67: At Marion, Jon Griffin's shot from the baseline with one-second left gave Northwood third place in the WOLD Christmas basketball tournament at Marion on Wednesday.

Griffin led all scorers with 24 points. Before his shot, Christiansburg had rallied from 10 points down to take the lead. The Blue Demons were led by Denny Self with 19 points and John Hairston, who had 17 points including three of Christiansburg's six 3-point shots.

In the championship game, Abingdon knocked off previously unbeaten Marion 65-51. \
