FIRST UNION'S BOARD

James B. Crawford, a Richmond coal company executive, has been elected to the board of First Union National Bank of Virginia, based in Roanoke.

Crawford, 51, is chairman of James River Coal Co., a corporation formed in 1988 to purchase the eastern Kentucky coal operations of Transco Energy Co.

He joined Transco Energy in 1981 as senior vice president for corporate development and was named president of a subsidiary, Transco Coal Co., when it was formed the following year.

Crawford previously was director and executive vice president at A.T. Massey Coal Co. and director and vice president of Bedford Advisors Inc., a management consulting firm.

Warner Dalhouse, chairman of First Union Corp. of Virginia, said Crawford's expertise in corporate financial planning and development "will be useful as we chart our course for the next several years."

Ben Jenkins, president of First Union Corp. of Virginia, said Crawford's coal-industry experience also will be helpful.

"The coal industry is an important component in Virginia's economy, particularly in the southwestern part of the state," he said.
