Carolina Steel files bankruptcy plan

Carolina Steel Corp., a Greensboro, N.C.-based maker of structural steel for railroad and highway bridges operating a plant in Roanoke County, said Tuesday it had filed a proposed disclosure statement with its bankruptcy reorganization plan and hired D. Leonard Wise, former chairman of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, as chief executive.

A full financial package, to be included as part of the final reorganization plan, will be given to the bankruptcy court at a hearing in April, the company said.

Sara Lee Corp., Chicago-based operator of knitwear mills in Martinsville and a L'eggs distribution center in Salem, said it has agreed on a joint venture with AXA, S.A. de C.V. to invest in its subsidiary, AXA Alimentos, S.A. de C.V., which owns Kir Alimentos, S.A. de C.V., a Monterrey, Mexico, meat processor. Kir will distribute selected Sara Lee meat products in Mexico. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Automotive Services Inc. of Roanoke said it has received a $32,797 order from Brown Printing Co. of Franklin, Ky., for an automated rotogravure press-cleaning system, to be installed beginning this month.

Budget Sales, a supplier of heat pumps; oil, gas and electric furnaces and related equipment, has opened at 2534 Shenandoah Ave., Roanoke. The company is affiliated with CMC Supply Inc., a plumbing equipment and fixtures supplier.

CCS Data Station of Christiansburg has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the business modernization division of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. The grant is part of a program to help small companies win certification under the International Standard Organization 9000 program to compete in global markets.
