CASHIER ANNOUNCES RUN FOR RADFORD CITY COUNCIL

Barbara Doyle is the latest - and possibly the last - announced City Council candidate. The 44-year-old convenience store cashier made her plans public Tuesday, the last day for filing.

Doyle said she plans to be an advocate for growth and development in the city's West End, which she said is being ignored in favor of the East End in terms of business development.

She also said she'd like Riverview Park on the East End to get the same level of maintenance that Bisset Park does on the other side of town.

"I'd really like to see Radford grow more," she said.

A native of Alta Vista, Doyle moved to Radford four years ago.

On Monday, master jeweler H. Todd Ratliff, a Radford resident since 1985, announced his intentions to run for one of the two council seats up for grabs May 3. Ratliff and Doyle join Radford University official William Yerrick and incumbent Councilwoman Polly Corn, who announced earlier. At least one of the political newcomers will join council July 1, since Councilman Gary Weddle has decided not to seek a second term. Council candidates run at large

Mayor Tom Starnes faces opposition from Councilman David Worrell in his re-election bid. Two years remain on Worrell's council term.
