BENTSEN PUSHES FOR BANK REFORM

Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen said Tuesday that failure to streamline the hodgepodge system of federal banking regulation risks another financial crisis.

But Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee said his proposal for a single banking regulator could open the way for political interference.

Bentsen said the administration's plan would make banking regulation more independent.

Two of the four agencies responsible for banks and S&Ls - the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Office of Thrift Supervision - are bureaus of the Treasury Department. The other two - the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. - are run by boards of presidential appointees.
