RUGBY CLUB'S SPRING SEASON OPENS SATURDAY

Rugby club's spring season opens Saturday

The Roanoke Rugby Club will start its spring season Saturday against a team from Johnson City, Tenn., at 1 p.m. in Highland Park.

Rugby is a contact sport that involves running, tackling and passing. The Roanoke club, which is celebrating its 22nd anniversary, fields two levels of competition, based on experience.

The club, which has a spring and fall season, has 40 active players and 100 semi-active, retired or social members. Players practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Villa Heights Park. Home games are at Highland Park.

In addition to its regular games this season, the Roanoke club will be host to the Ed and Sandy Lee Cup in October at Green Hill Park in Salem.

Twenty-four clubs, both male and female, from across Virginia Commonwealth will participate in the tournament, named for Ed Lee, a Richmond attorney who founded the Virginia Rugby Union. The Roanoke club is a member of the union.
