EPA MOVES TO BAN LEAD FISHING SINKERS

The Environmental Protection Agency took the first step Thursday toward banning the manufacture, sale and use of lead and zinc fishing sinkers, saying they posed a risk to waterfowl.

The agency proposed a regulation that would prohibit lead or zinc sinkers smaller than 1 inch in diameter. A final rule was expected to be issued after a 60-day comment period.

Environmentalists have urged the EPA to ban the sinkers because they often are ingested by water birds, causing convulsions and death within a few weeks.
