The Keydets (5-22), the worst shooting team in the conference, made 15 of their first 23 shots to advance to a quarterfinal at 7 p.m. today against second-seeded Da- vidson. Of those shots, 10th-seeded VMI was 8-of-11 from 3-point range to bolt to a 39-17 lead 4 minutes, 21 seconds before halftime. The Thundering Herd never got closer than seven points in the second half.
The last time a bottom seed won a Southern tournament game was in 1956, B when Washington and Lee beat George Washington 63-60 as a No. 8 seed.
Jonathan Goodman led the Keydets, losers of eight of nine coming into the game, with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Darryl Faulkner also scored 18 points.
Seventh-seeded Marshall (9-18) was hurt by 16 first-half turnovers in coach Dwight Freeman's last game. Those miscues led to 19 points for the Keydets.
The Thundering Herd did close to 48-41 early in the second half as VMI missed nine of its first 10 from the field. But Goodman took control inside and Faulkner started hitting again from the outside.
The Keydets hit 15 free throws in the final 5 1/2 minutes.
Troy Gray led Marshall with 17 points and 12 rebounds, but leading scorer Shawn Moore (17.6) was held to six points on 2-for-8 shooting.

\ Virginia Tech 60, UNC Charlotte 37: In Charlotte, N.C., the Hokies didn't suffer any letdown after their victory over No. 18 Southern Mississippi on Monday night.
Virginia Tech wrapped up second place in the Metro Conference and closed the regular season with a rout of the 49ers. The Hokies' Christi Osborne went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line, giving her a school-record 33 in a row without a miss. Teammate Sue Logsdon set the old record of 28 in 1990-91.
Stephanie Carter scored 10 points and former William Byrd High School standout added nine for Tech (21-5, 9-3).
Markita Aldridge scored a game-high 18 points for UNCC (13-12, 4-8). Notes
\ TECH'S ROOT HONORED: Virginia Tech women's basketball player Jenny Root is the Metro Conference's female student-athlete of the month for February, the league announced Thursday.
Root, who was the Metro's player of the week for the period ending Feb. 7, averaged 15 points and eight rebounds per game during February. She had 37 points and 26 rebounds in victories over Louisville and 19th-ranked Southern Mississippi, and scored her 1,000th career point Feb. 26 against Tulane.
Root, a junior majoring in civil engineering, earned a 3.17 grade-point average last semester.
\ \ FRETT HONORED: Georgia's La'Keshia Frett, a former Virginia high school standout, was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year in a vote by the league's women's coaches. The Hampton native has averaged 14.4 points for the Bulldogs (16-10).
