THE TIPOFF

GOOD SKATES: With the Winter Olympics fresh in our memories, we await the visit of Kristi Yamaguchi and other former Olympic medalists to the Roanoke Civic Center. Their America Tour will roll into town Wednesday for a 7:30 performance. The lineup also includes Scott Hamilton, Paul Wylie, Brian Orser and Rosalynn Sumners, Elena Bechke and Denis Petrov, Kitty and Peter Carruthers, Christine Hough and Doug Ladret and Natalia Annenko and Genrich Sretenski.

Free shuttle buses will run to the center from the Williamson Road Parking Garage in downtown Roanoke, beginning at 6:15.

TUNE UP: The Shanghai String Quartet will present a concert Saturday night at 8 at Olin Theater at Roanoke College in Salem. The group will perform Beethoven's Op. 18, No. 6, Zhou Long's ``Song of the Ch'in'' and Dvorak's Op. 105.

John Hitchings, music professor at Radford University, will present a preview at 7:30 in Olin 325.

The quartet is regarded as one of the most exciting in its field. It has been ensemble-in-residence at the Tanglewood and Ravinia festivals and at the University of Richmond.

Tickets are $11 for adults and $7 for students 18 and under. The concert is sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Chamber Music Society. Call 375-2333.

IT'S SUMMER: George Winston, piano player and sometime guitarist, will bring his Summer Show to the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium Thursday night at 7:30. He'll play his ``rural folk'' piano pieces as well as stride piano, rhythm and blues and music from ``Peanuts.''

Tickets are $16.50, or, for students and senior citizens, $14.50. Those who attend are encouraged to bring donations of nonperishable food for the TAP/Southwest Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank.

YUK-YUK: Comedian Jerry Clower will tell his country-style jokes Saturday night at 8 at Martinsville High School. Tickets are $10. The show is sponsored by Patrick Henry Community College.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Berlin Chamber Orchestra will perform Thursday night at 8 at Covington High School and March 12 at 8 in Olin Theater of Roanoke College.

Directed by Heinz Schunk, the 16-member ensemble is noted for having nearly all its musicians stand while they play, for its fine musicianship and for Schunk's solo performance in each show.

ACTING THEATRICAL: ``Marvin's Room,'' a new comedy by Scott McPherson, will make its Virginia premiere Thursday through March 26 at Live Arts of Charlottesville. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 and $6. Call (804) 293-7595 for the complete schedule.
