HOKIES STILL WINLESS AFTER 7-3 LOSS

The Virginia Tech baseball team continued its sluggish start with a 7-3 loss to East Carolina on Friday afternoon in Greenville, N.C.

The Pirates (8-3) got back-to-back home runs from Brian Yerys and Scott Bermingham off Hokies starter Ron Preston (0-1) during a four-run first inning that proved to be the difference.

Tech (0-3) scored two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by right fielder Matt Reynolds and a sacrifice fly by center fielder Popeye Smith, then added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Smith. Rob Gibson, a senior from Salem, pitched two shutout innings of relief for the Hokies, striking out three.

Virginia's baseball doubleheader today against Seton Hall has been canceled because of poor field conditions in Charlottesville. The teams will play a doubleheader Sunday at UVa Field.

In Lexington, Washington and Lee's game Friday and a doubleheader today against West Virginia Tech have been postponed because of a wet field. No makeup date has been set for the games.
