TECH NAMES ANIMAL, POULTRY SCIENCE HEAD

An internationally recognized livestock judge and longtime Virginia Tech teacher has been named head of the new animal and poultry sciences department in the school's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Gary L. Minish, Tech 1976 Teaching Excellence Award winner, takes over the recently reorganized departments. He succeeds John Wolford, who was long the head of the Poultry Science Unit. When the poultry and animal science were merged July 1, Wolford asked to return to teaching and research.

Minish came to Tech in 1966 after receiving his doctorate in animal science from Michigan State. At Tech, he's served in positions ranging from assistant professor to associate dean and director of development and agriculture technology. He has taught 10 different courses in animal production and livestock management, and also won the Gamma Sigma Delta Faculty Teaching Award. "He is a very outstanding teacher," said Dean Andy Swiger.
