CHILHOWIE STYMIES GRAYSON CO. 56-42

Grayson County's best season ended with one of its worst games Saturday night.

Chilhowie (17-9) stymied the Blue Devils defensively and slammed the door shut on the Mountain Empire District champions in a 56-42 win in Saturday night's Region C semi-finals.

Chilhowie plays Parry McCluer, a 59-51 winner over Lebanon in the evening's first game, in the championship game at Emory & Henry's King Gymnasium Monday at 6:30 p.m. It will be the Warriors' first regional championship appearance in nearly a decade. The Warriors also advance to next week's Group A quarterfinals at Radford University's Dedmon Center.

Hemmed in by Chilhowie's 2-3 zone, Grayson County (20-5), which finished its best season since the school opened in 1988, scored just 12 points in the second and third quarters combined.

The Warriors effectively limited the offensive opportunities of Blue Devils big man Brian Boyer, who was held to 12 points, nearly six below his average.

"We forced a lot of shots," said Grayson County head coach John Ayers. "We said before the game, we wouldn't rely on the 3-pointer. We wanted to establish the inside game, but it was tough getting the ball inside to Brian. They were very physical, and we didn't play our best game."

The Warriors led for most of the game and began to pull away late in the third quarter. A 15-footer by Chilhowie's Jeff Robinson with eight seconds left in the third put Grayson County down 34-26 entering the final period. A steal and layup by D.J. Preston and follow shot by Shane Olinger gave the Warriors a 38-26 lead with 7:05 to play.

Chilhowie stretched the lead to 17 points at 53-36 late in the fourth period.

Preston led Chilhowie with 19 points. Olinger had 12, Craig Mason scored 11 and Jeff Robinson had 10. \
