ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Home sales in the Roanoke Valley jumped 10.6 percent in February from a year earlier. The Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors said 333 houses were placed under contract last month compared with 301 in February 1993, making last month the association's most active February since 1990.

Tim Garrison, association president, said a slight increase in interest rates "helped move a number of people off the fence." He said indicators also show a solid local economy with strong employment growth.
