TECH GOLFER SHARES 2ND IN FLORIDA

Virginia Tech's Curtis Deal is tied for second place after the first two rounds of the Budget/UCF Golf Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Deal shot rounds of 71 and 72 for a 143 first-day total at the par-72, 7,176-yard Eastwood Golf Club.

Trey Sones of Central Florida shot a 72-70-142 to take the early lead. Tim Cantwell of Mississippi scored a 71-72-143 to tie Deal for second.

Central Florida also leads the team standings with a 294-287-581. in Scoreboard.)

Tech scored a 299-305-604 and is in 11th place.

Also for Tech, Sean Farrell had a 72-81-153, Brian Sharp 77-77-154, David Havens 85-75-160 and Matt Martin 79-83-162.

The tournament concludes today.

In other area college sports:

Virginia Tech won its first baseball game of the season when Bo Durkac's solo home run in the top of the ninth inning gave the Hokies a 10-9 victory over Purdue in the opening game of the Stetson Invitational in Deland, Fla.

Durkac, a junior third baseman, went 3-for-5. He also doubled and singled and scored three runs.

Tech relievers Sena Hummel (1-0) and Chris Freeman struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory, with Freeman, a freshman left-hander, striking out the top two hitters in the Boilermakers' batting order for his first save.

Purdue errors helped Tech build an 8-3 lead, including seven unearned runs in the third inning. The Boilermakers came back to tie the score at 8-8 in the sixth inning. The teams each scored in the seventh and entered the ninth still tied.

Purdue starter Eric Delaney gave up nine runs in seven innings, but only one was earned.

Tech (1-4) had 10 hits and one error. Purdue had 10 hits and four errors.

Tech's seven-hit third inning included a two-run double by freshman first baseman Kevin Barker and RBI singles by Durkac, right fielder Matt Reynolds of Roanoke, designated hitter Josh Herman of Roanoke and left fielder John Mader. Herman Barker and Mader finished with two hits each.

Stetson was led by right fielder Rob McKeeman, who had three hits, including a two-run homer.

At Columbia, S.C., South Carolina defeated Radford 10-1 in baseball before a crowd of 738.

Scott Pace (5-0) went 6 2/3 innings, struck out eight, walked four, allowed six of Radford's seven hits and one earned run. Craig Ross struck out two in recording his fourth save.

Alex Vaxmonsky and Jeff Francis each had two hits for the Highlanders, and Francis drove in Kelly Dampeer for Radford's run.

The Gamecocks, who scored seven runs in the seventh inning, got 13 hits off five Radford pitchers. Highlanders starter Mike Parker (0-1) took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs, five earned in 6 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

South Carolina's Mac White went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a home run.

At Glen Maury Park in Lexington, VMI routed St. Joseph's 18-9 in lacrosse. Keydets freshman Matt McLean had four goals, and Rusty Parrino, Joe Brockman and Mike Fellows each scored three. VMI plays host to Siena College today.
