HILLIN QUITS HIS NASCAR RACE TEAM

Bobby Hillin Jr. resigned Monday as the driver for the NASCAR Winston Cup team owned by Junie Donlavey after a disappointing 1993 season and a poor start this year.

"Neither one of us was happy with what we are trying to do with this race team," Donlavey said in a news release. "It is not anybody's fault. It is not working out for either of us, so it is smart for Bobby to do what he did."

Hillin said he had a difference in philosophy with Donlavey. "It's just the way I feel," he said.

Hillin, 29, of Charlotte, N.C., said he had been considering leaving for the past six months.

Hillin began driving the Ford Thunderbird for the Heilig-Meyers team at the start of last season. His best 1993 finish was 11th at Michigan. He was 27th in the overall standings at the end of the year, with six finishes in the top 15.

This year, Hillin was 24th in the Daytona 500 after getting involved in a mid-race wreck with 10 other drivers. He finished 33rd at Rockingham with alternator problems, and was 26th on Sunday in the Pontiac 400 at Richmond as a provisional starter.

Donlavey said he did not know who would replace Hillin.

"We have to get someone in a hurry," he said. The next race on the Winston Cup schedule is Sunday's Purolator 500 at Atlanta.
