"We appreciate the effort that Chuck Swenson and his staff made for William and Mary," said John Randolph, the Williamsburg school's athletic director.
The Tribe was 4-23 this season, the worst record in Swenson's tenure, the second worst in school history and the worst for a Colonial Athletic Association team since East Carolina went 4-24 a decade ago. Swenson's best record was 13-15 in 1990-91.
Swenson, 40, was hired March 27, 1987, after 10 years as an assistant coach, including seven years at Duke.
"Everything I've done at William and Mary, I have done 100 percent and with integrity," Swenson said in a statement.
Randolph said he hopes to hire a new coach before the April signing period for recruits.
