Jackson's son to speak

Jesse Jackson Jr. will present the keynote address, ``The Face of Racism Today,'' at a Roanoke College Honors Program Conference on March 17 at 7 p.m. in Olin Theater. A reception will follow the lecture.

Jackson, the oldest son of the Rev. and Mrs. Jesse Jackson, is the field director of his father's National Rainbow Coalition and president of the ``Keep Hope Alive'' political action committee.

Another program, ``Confronting the Self,'' will be led by Mary J. Simpson, who is employed in social work in Roanoke. Simpson will speak on March 17 at 11:20 a.m. in the Sutton Student Center Ballroom.

Jackson also will present a forum on ``Making a Difference: The Politics of the Disenfranchised'' at 10:20 a.m. on March 18 in the Sutton Student Center Ballroom.

Both events are free, but tickets are required for the March 17 lecture. To reserve them, call the Olin Box Office at 375-2333.

Family history seminar

The Family History Institute, sponsored by Kegley Books of Wytheville, will be held on May 21 at the Holiday Inn in Wytheville. The one-day seminar will include sessions on evaluating resources, wills, handwriting and cemetery and military records. A banquet also will be held, at which genealogist Jo White Linn will speak on ``Getting Into Print: How to Publish a Family History Without Brain Strain.''

Pre-registration is required. For information, call 228-3420.

Tech teleconference

On March 24, the Science Museum of Western Virginia, Virginia Tech and the Roanoke Valley Graduate Center will present an interactive teleconference and follow-up discussion on ``Quality at the End of Life.''

The teleconference, broadcast from Virginia Tech and linked with about 200 sites in the United States by the PBS Adult Learning Satellite Service, will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the graduate center in downtown Roanoke. Roanoke is among the selected sites where participants may ask questions.

The telecast and post-discussion will address the issues concerning health care options, physician-assisted suicide, individual choices versus social restrictions, and the dilemmas created by new medical technologies capable of extending life.

To register for the teleconference, call the science museum at 342-5718.
