`FRAUD AGAINST SENIORS' TOPIC OF TALK

On Tuesday March 15 at 10 a.m., Betty Blakemore, state director of consumer services, will discuss "FRAUD AGAINST SENIORS." At noon, Nancy Root of Home Health Care Inc. will talk about home health care.

The meeting will be held at the Blacksburg Recreation Center on Patrick Henry Drive and is sponsored by the Blacksburg AARP chapter 2613. Participants should bring a brown bag lunch; soda, coffee and tea will be available, and all seniors are invited.

A one day conference on "QUALITY OF LIFE AT THE END OF LIFE" will be held at Virginia Tech on Thursday March 24. Attendance is free. The program will take place at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and will address issues such as new medical options, prolonging life, access to medical care and the role of government in the last stages of human existence.

The Blacksburg Retired Citizens group is planning a TRIP TO CHARLESTON AND SAVANNAH, April 11-15. The welcome to Charleston features a tram tour at Charles Towne Landing exploring 80 acres of magnificent gardens. For details, call Catherine Edwards at 552-2510.

The New River Valley SENIOR OLYMPICS will be held in April, and the registration deadline to be eligible for a medal is Tuesday March 22. Bridge, canasta, rook and bowling events will take place on Monday April 18. Walking, horseshoes, croquet, checkers, frisbee, jump rope, basketball, shotput, discus, riflery, casting and softball hit and throw competition is scheduled for Tuesday April 19.

The Radford Senior Center is taking reservations for a WATERCOLOR CLASS for adult beginners. The class will be taught by Radford artist Lyndall Mason, and will meet on Mondays, April 4, 11, 18, 25 and May 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the senior center, 27 First St.

Interested persons must register at the Radford Recreation Department, 29 First St., by Monday March 28. Cost is $35, and checks should be made payable to the Radford Senior Center.

The RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, 1 Franklin St., Courthouse Annex, Christiansburg, 382-5775:

The Christiansburg morning group is going to Brookmeade in Shawsville at 10 a.m. for a friendly visit. The afternoon group will go to Meadowbrook at 1:30 p.m.

The Blacksburg group will meet at 10 a.m. and go out to lunch after.

The Shawsville group will have a birthday party at Meadowbrook on Monday. March 14

The Warm Hearth group will visit English Meadows at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15 and the McCoy group will go to Heritage Hall at 2 p.m.

The RADFORD SENIOR CENTER, 27 First St., 731-3634:

A class will be held on Thursday, March 10.10 a.m.-3 p.m., to design a spring or Easter shirt. Materials cost $4 and participants should bring a prewashed, 100 percent cotton shirt, and a sandwich for the lunch break.

The Radford chapter of the American Association for Retired Persons will have a potluck dinner at 5 p.m. on Wednesday March 16.

The PULASKI SENIOR CENTERo, 106 N. Washington Ave., 980-3969:

A trip is planned on Friday March 11 to attend the Southern Living Cooking Show and American Women's Show in Roanoke. The van will leave at 8:30 a.m. The cooking school is 10 a.m.-noon. Travelers will have a late lunch and return to Pulaski around 5 p.m.

The Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Service meetings on Thursday mornings at 10 will address food preparation on March 10, home safety on March 17 and medications on March 24.

The next round-table discussion and luncheon will be on Tuesday March 15 at 11 a.m. Lunch is $2, and reservations must be made by Monday. March 14.

Senior identification cards will be made Thursday March 24 between 10 a.m. and noon. People 60 and older who would like a card must bring proof of age and Social Security cards. The ID card can be used at participating merchants to obtain discounts and other services and may be used as a form of identification. A $1.50 donation helps defray costs.

The CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St., 382-8173:

A free hearing screening will be held Thursday March 10 between 11 a.m. and noon.

Anyone interested may go to the Southern Living Cooking Show on Friday. Transportation fee is $3 and admission is $2. The van will leave the National Guard Armory at 8:30 a.m.

A free hair fair is scheduled for Tuesday March 15 9:30-11 a.m. at the senior center.

Representatives from Social Security will be available to answer questions and offer assistance on Thursday, March 17, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the National Guard Armory. Officials from the Veterans Administration will be available between 1 and 3 p.m.

The GILES COUNTY SENIOR CENTER, 1320 Wenonah Ave., Pearisburg, 921-3924:

The 55 Alive driving class will be held March 29-31. Tuesday-Thursday Register at the senior center.

There will be a potluck lunch on Friday March 11 at 12:30 and ceramics and crafts all day. On Friday March 18, chapter 502 of the American Association for Retired Persons will meet at noon.
