FEARING JAIL, MAN SHUNS TREATMENT, DIES

A 34-year-old Ivanhoe man who failed to appear for sentencing after being convicted of aggravated sexual battery died Wednesday morning, apparently while avoiding police.

Ronnie Douglas Davis had complained of breathing problems Tuesday night, according to Wythe County Sheriff's Office Investigator Keith Dunigan.

Dunigan said Davis refused to seek treatment or transportation to a hospital, according to people who were with him, because he feared he would be arrested. He had been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison under a plea agreement after originally having been charged with rape.

He was sentenced in his absence.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
