TECH WOMEN IN METRO FINAL

The Virginia Tech women's basketball team earned a first Wednesday night in the Metro Conference tournament: a spot in the championship game.

The Hokies (23-5) inched closer to a possible NCAA Tournament berth by beating North Carolina-Charlotte 63-55 in a semifinal at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Tech, which has never been in the NCAA Tournament, will play top-seeded Southern Mississippi at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the championship game.

Five Hokies scored in double figures. Sue Logsdon led Tech with 14 points, Lisa Leftwich had 13 and Christi Osborne added 12.

Reserve Hokies guard Teri Garland, a former Pulaski County High School star, dislocated her left shoulder in the first half and probably will miss the rest of the postseason.

Tech bolted to a 28-13 halftime lead as UNC Charlotte went scoreless for almost seven minutes. The 49ers' Charlene Reid hit an eight-foot jumper in the lane, was fouled, and coverted the free throw to pull UNCC to 52-47 with 2 minutes, 44 seconds remaining, but the 49ers (14-13) got no closer.

The Hokies nailed seven of eight free throws in the final 43 seconds to clinch the victory.

UNCC shot 20 percent from the field in the first half and 36.7 percent for the game. Tech connected on 46.5 percent of its shots from the field. The Hokies also sank 21 of 30 free throws.
