TIRE-SHREDDING PROGRAM TO START IN CRAIG COUNTY

Craig County is slowly getting rid of scrap tires but Jefferson National Forest seems to be getting them.

County Administrator Richard Flora recently told the board of supervisors that the number of tires in the county landfill had decreased since he began monitoring it to prevent illegal dumping of tires from outside the county.

But, Flora said, officials with Jefferson National Forest said the illegal dumping of tires in the forest has increased.

But there should be relief for all parties soon because a tire shredder is expected to begin operations this month.

The shredder will be operated by the Appalachian Regional Recycling Consortium, which was formed by six Southwest Virginia planning district commissions. Flora said the consortium expects that the shredding program will reduce the number of old tires dumped illegally throughout the area.
