HOKIES SPLIT WITH PURDUE, PITTSBURGH

Denny Hedspeth and Kris Turberville each drove in four runs, and Sean Hummel pitched five innings of shutout relief as Virginia Tech defeated Purdue 12-7 at DeLand, Fla., on Thursday afternoon in the Stetson Invitational baseball tournament.

In a non-tournament game Thursday night, Pitt routed the Hokies 12-4.

Tech (3-6), which improved its record to 3-1 in the tournament, batted around in the third and fourth innings to take command against Purdue. Turberville, a redshirt freshman starting his first game, had two-run singles in both innings as the Hokies scored five in the third and four in the fourth.

Hummel (2-0) took over for starter Chris Freeman to start the fifth inning and gave up five hits. The sophomore struck out two and walked none.

In the first inning, Hedspeth drove in two runs with a single as Tech grabbed a 3-0 lead. He added another RBI single in the fourth. Tech also got two hits from freshman John Mader.

Purdue (2-5) is 1-3 in the tournament.

In the night game, Pitt (5-0) used 12 hits and nine steals - five of them in a four-run fifth inning - to batter Tech.

The Hokies were held to six hits, one of them a solo home run by David Fitt, his fourth homer of the season. Rob Gibson (0-1) of Salem started and took the loss. Gibson gave up seven runs - five earned - struck out five and walked two.

The Hokies will face Evansville today in another tournament game and will then play Pitt in another non-tournament game tonight.

In Ferrum, Matt Smith and David Jones combined to drive in seven runs as the Panthers pounded Juniata 16-1 in baseball.

Smith went 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBI, and Jones was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI for Ferrum (4-0).

Jim Hamilton (2-0) picked up the victory with three innings of shutout relief work. He struck out six.

Wally Essick took the loss for Juniata (0-4).

The Panthers travel to Rocky Mount, N.C., today for a 1 p.m. showdown with fellow Dixie Conference power North Carolina Wesleyan. The teams meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday.
