GRAND JURY TO HEAR CASE OF SHOOTING NEAR DORM

A judge certified charges to a grand jury Thursday against a former Ferrum College basketball player and a Bassett man, but dismissed misdemeanor charges against them.

General District Judge James Joines ruled there was probable cause to support felony charges of shooting into an occupied vehicle against Sean E. Conyers, the team's former starting center, and charges of shooting at an occupied building against Tiwan M. Dillard.

Conyers, 21, and Dillard, 18, are accused of firing weapons when a Jan. 22 argument outside of a Ferrum dormitory escalated into gunshots.

Joines dismissed for lack of evidence charges that the men destroyed property

Neither Conyers nor Dillard testified Thursday. The case now goes to the grand jury that meets this month in Franklin County Circuit Court.
