REGION'S ECONOMY OUTRUNS NATIONAL

Purchasing managers say industrial and manufacturing activity in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia is outpacing national averages.

The new monthly survey released Thursday is done by the College of Charleston's business school and the regional chapter of the National Association of Purchasing Management.

The regional index stood at 61.2 in February, its highest level in a year, and compared with the national index of 56.6.

The index is compiled from surveys of purchasing managers at more than 100 companies in 20 different industries.

Along with an ``explosion of new orders,'' the region has been spared much of the weather turmoil in other parts of the country, the report said.
