STUDENTS BACK FIRED PRESIDENT OF SEMINARY

Nearly 1,000 students at the nation's largest seminary gathered on the lawn of the fired president's house Thursday to show support for the man they say fell victim to Baptist politics.

Russell Dilday thanked the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary students for their support, telling them he would likely have his job if he had yielded to demands to take a more conservative stand.

The 63-year-old Dilday was fired abruptly after he refused to take early retirement. Dilday had been president of the 4,000-student seminary, the nation's largest, since August 1978.
