CALIF. REVERSES BAN ON RESPECTED AUTHORS

School officials reversed themselves Friday and allowed a story by Alice Walker that had been criticized by religious fundamentalists to be used on student tests.

At a hearing Friday, several speakers accused the state Board of Education of racial bias in banning the work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning black writer.

In addition to Walker's story, "Roselily," the board also reversed its ban on two other stories. One was also by Walker and the other, by Annie Dillard, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and alumnus of Hollins College. - Associated Press
