FIRST UNION BANK BRANCH ROBBED

The First Union National Bank branch in the Market Square East shopping center on Orange Avenue Northeast was robbed Friday afternoon.

At 12:46 p.m., Roanoke police said, a man entered the bank, handed a teller a note that said he had a gun, and gave the bank employee a yellow plastic container.

After an undetermined amount of cash was put into the container, the man grabbed it and fled.

The suspect - who remained at large Friday - did not show a gun, but kept his hand inside his pocket during the robbery, police said.
