DEMON DEACONS GET PAST JACKETS

Wake Forest hadn't won an ACC tournament game since 1987. How long ago was that? The Demon Deacons' point guard then was Muggsy Bogues.

And when Wake finally was successful at the Charlotte Coliseum on Friday night, it still hurt.

Coach Dave Odom's team secured its second straight 20-win season and finished the quarterfinal round as the seeds were sown, eliminating defending ACC tournament champ Georgia Tech 74-49 in the schools' first meeting in tournament history.

It was almost as painful a game to watch as it was to play for a star from each team - and that can't be good news for the postseason plans of Wake or Tech (16-12), which certainly did nothing to remove itself from the NCAA bubble.

Deacons guard Randolph Childress played with a mild left shoulder sprain that caused him to miss the loss at North Carolina State that closed Wake's regular season a week ago.

If it wasn't enough that Childress played against the Yellow Jackets much of the time with his left arm pinned to his side while he ran, he injured his right knee when he took a flip while going after a loose ball with 12 minutes, 48 seconds left in the game.

Wake was comfortably ahead at the time, 50-34. One reason it was so lopsided - besides the Deacons' offensive efficiency - was the immobility of Tech inside force James Forrest.

He had missed the last two games of the regular season. Wake played good defense, but Forrest's obvious limp and painful landings when he jumped did as much to hobble Tech as anything.

The loss left Tech 7-10 against ACC competition this season and 8-11 against teams in the final Ratings Percentage Index that is being used by the NCAA Basketball Committee to select the 34 at-large teams for the tournament field.
