FBI agents, along with Roanoke and Salem police, approached Paul W. Charman at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the United Parcel Service facility on Thirlane Road Northwest, according to a news release from the FBI.
The suspect fled in a truck. He was caught a short time later, police said.
Stanley Klein, special agent in charge of the Richmond Division of the FBI, said Charman was accused of taking part in a complicated scheme using counterfeit checks and bogus checking accounts to defraud banks in the Roanoke area and in nearby states.
Charman, who operates a trophy and engraving business in Salem, was being held in the Roanoke City Jail pending an appearance before a U.S. magistrate, Klein said.
