VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN TO BE PROBED

Violence against women proved a key concern for the U.N. Human Rights Commission, which ordered a worldwide study of the problem.

The 53-nation panel, which ended its annual six-week session late Friday, renewed its ritual rebukes to Israel and South Africa, and added Chad and Zaire to a list of 31 countries that will get special attention in the coming year.

The women's investigator, to be named in April, will study the extent of problems like rape and sexual slavery in wartime, as well as violence in the home, and is to recommend ways of combatting them.

The decision was a major victory for women's rights, said Geraldine Ferraro, chief of the U.S. delegation. "This is the year when the rights of man finally became the rights of women, too." - Associated Press
