ONE-ON-ONE BEGINS TODAY

The season may be over, but basketball remains to be played for six boys who participated in the state high school tournaments this weekend.

Defending champion Kevin Garst of newly crowned Group AA champion Salem heads the lineup for the 18th Knights of Columbus One-on-One Tournament that begins today at 2:30 p.m. at Roanoke Catholic High School.

Garst will play Roanoke Catholic's Tony Joyce at 2:30. Also at 2:30, Derrick Hines of Group AAA runner-up William Fleming plays Chad Brammer of Group AA semifinalist Northside, Chris Combs of Patrick Henry plays Marcus Cardwell of North Cross and Matt Matheny of Cave Spring plays Quincy Freeman of William Fleming.

In games at 4 p.m., 1993 one-on-one runner-up Mark Byington of Salem plays Jemarh Patterson of Roanoke Catholic, James Irvin of Cave Spring plays Justin Porterfield of Northside, Shannon Taylor of Patrick Henry plays Mike McGuire of William Byrd and Monty Smith of North Cross plays Donald Childress of William Byrd.

Second-round games will be played at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, with the semifinals next Sunday.

Competition in the 25th annual team tournament continues today, beginning with a Little League division quarterfinals game at 12:30 p.m. The day's final game starts at 6:45. - Staff report
