NEW QUARTERS FOR MEAT MARKET

Mason & Hannabass Meat Market, a 56-year fixture on the Roanoke City Market, has a new address.

While the old-time butcher shop hasn't moved far, it's taking on a new face.

Prompted by a landlord's decision to put its building up for sale, Mason & Hannabass has moved from Market Street to a newly remodeled shop about a block down Campbell Avenue next to Mr. Su's restaurant.

Ernest Arthur, former owner of the Boiler Room on Campbell Avenue and Ernie's Restaurant on Market Street, was watching the meat market's move into its new location Saturday morning.

Arthur said he had been buying meat from Mason & Hannabass since 1949. "I've tried other people's hamburger and it just can't come up with their product," he said.

The new Mason & Hannabass will have an even wider range of meats than in the past, Manager Mark Bradbury said. He is the son-in-law of Milton Miller, who bought the business about four years ago.

The new market will feature a deli, The Greedy Pig, which will prepare sandwiches for takeout. It won't have any tables but will have some standing room if a customer wants to eat in, Bradbury said.

The market will be expanding its line of luncheon meats beyond its traditional Esskay brand. At the new location, it will also offer Kahn, Hillshire and Oscar Mayer luncheon meats; a new Sarah Lee brand of top-grade turkey breast; and kosher meats, he said.

The deli will bake its own bread and will have a rotisserie. A fax machine will be available for receiving takeout orders, Bradbury said.
