HOKIES SHARE 3RD IN GOLF

Virginia Tech used the low round of the day to tie for third place at the ECU/Sheraton Emerald Intercollegiate golf tournament in New Bern, N.C.

Second-round leader Duke used a 300 to finish with an 893 total and a 17-stroke victory over second-place College of Charleston on the 6,951-yard, par-72 Emerald Golf Club course. Tech shot a 13-over 297 to tie North Carolina-Charlotte at 911.

Chris Winchip of Winthrop won medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69 and a 216 total, beating Duke's Mike Mueher by three strokes. Tech's Curtis Deal tied for fourth with a 73 and a 223 total.

Other Tech scorers in the final round were Sean Farrell (73), Matt Martin (75) and David Havens (76).
