Richmond (9-3) built a 10-2 lead with a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning. The Hokies countered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and took a 12-10 lead with six runs in the sixth.
The Spiders evened the score in the seventh before Tech (6-7) took the lead for good on a run-scoring single by Fitt in the bottom of the inning. The Hokies added another run in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
Fitt singled in the second and third innings, then smashed a two-run double in the fifth. He singled again in the sixth and seventh innings and finished with another RBI-double in the eighth. His 6-for-6 day tied him with Doug Baase and George Canale for the school single-game mark.
Mark Thompson (1-0), Tech's fourth pitcher, pitched only one-third of an inning but got the win for Tech. Charlie Gillian pitched the last two innings and earned his second save of the season.
