POLICE OFFICER INJURED MAKING DRUG ARREST

A Roanoke County police officer received minor injuries Monday night in a scuffle with a man suspected of possessing marijuana.

Officer Steven Elswick injured his wrist and was treated at Lewis-Gale Hospital.

Sgt. J.W. Custer said Elswick saw a pickup truck hit a utility pole guy wire around 7 p.m. in the parking lot of a restaurant on Old Cave Spring Road near Brambleton Avenue. When Elswick reached the pickup, four men were standing around the truck and a car that had pulled up alongside.

Police said Elswick thought he smelled alcohol on a passenger in the pickup, frisked him and found what was suspected to be marijuana in his pocket.

When the suspect tried to flee, Elswick caught him a few feet away after a scuffle, Custer said.

Barry Dean Vandyke, 28, of the 2000 block of Colgate Street Northeast was charged with assault and battery, resisting arrest, public drunkenness and possession of marijuana.

The driver and passenger of the car were later arrested inside the restaurant after what was thought to be marijuana was found in their car.

Delmas S. Keaton, 22, of the 1200 block of Tazewell Avenue Southeast and Daniel W. Reynolds, 30, of the 700 block of Bridge Street Southwest were charged with possession of marijuana.

The driver of the pickup truck, John Keesee, 33, of the 4100 block of Kentucky Avenue Northwest, was charged with property damage.
