Winter is winding down and spring is starting up.
That means there are a lot of things to going on - basketball tournaments, volleyball playoffs, baseball and softball sign-ups, clinics and lessons of various types.
So without further ado, here we go into what's been happening and what will be happening soon.
ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP: The Warriors and the Hornets became winners in the Pulaski youth basketball leagues last week.
The Warriors captured the Girls 15-and-under championship. The Hornets won the Boys 10-and-under title.
The teams won their titles in very different fashions.
The Warriors (11-0) edged the Magic 30-29. Two free throws by CHELSI BURNETTE and a short jumper by MANDY MOORE in the closing minutes kept the Warriors in front.
The victory gave the Warriors their fifth straight playoff crown. It also marked the first time a Junior Girls team went through the season without a loss.
Balanced scoring keyed the Warriors. No player scored in double-figures in the title game but five tallied at least four points. MELISSA BLEVINS and KRISTEN LILLY led the way with eight a piece.
LAUREN HUFF led the Magic (7-4) with a game-high 12 points.
Blevins and Huff were named co-MVPs of the league.
The Hornets (15-0) capped a perfect season by easily downing the Suns 50-21.
JEFF KING poured in 18 points - nine in each half - to pace the Hornets. KELLEN WOLFORD added nine points.
TODD SOUTHERN of the Suns (9-4) led all scorers with 13 points.
King and Wolford shared the league MVP honors.
In the Christiansburg Men's Slowbreak League, The Rebels (6-0) are the last team without a loss.
The Rebels stayed perfect by beating Leisure Way 78-57.
Meanwhile, previously perfect Triangle Lanes (7-1) fell into second place when it fell to Southern States 109-69. Triangle did rebound with a 60-48 win over New River Pontiac-GMC-Nissan.
The Presbyterian teams are 1-2 in the Christiansburg Men's Church Slowbreak League. In a showdown, Presbyterian I (5-1) beat Presbyterian II (6-2) 51-38. Both teams won their match-ups later that week.
Presbyterian (4-2) pulled into a first-place tie with Woodmen of the World (4-2) in the Christiansburg Women's Slowbreak League.
Fitness Center (12-1) remains fit and is still sitting atop the Radford Men's Slowbreak league.
Harvey's knocked Fitness Center from the ranks of the unbeatens with a 60-58 win.
But Fitness Center came back to knock-off second-place Shelor's (10-3) 77-59 and Jordan Oil 70-51.
SERVING UP SPIKES AND SETS: The tournament will decide who is the best team in the Radford Coed B Division Volleyball.
RFC and Out for Fun finished the regular season tied for first at 9-3.
Out for Fun won three matches and RFC two over the last week of the regular season to create the tie.
RFC received the top seed for the tournament. But that allowed Out for Fun to get a head start on continuing its winning ways as it downed Hot Rods 15-7, 15-4 in the first round of the tournament.
The tournament finals are scheduled for March 22.
Athlete's Choice (15-1) became the choice in the Radford Coed A Division.
A.C. won three matches and took advantage of a rare loss by second-place Jetsetters (11-2) to open a 21/2-game lead.
SIGN-UPS GALORE:Registration continues for spring activities in both Christiansburg and Montgomery County.
In Christiansburg, sign-ups continue through April 8 for Men's, Women's and Coed Open softball teams.
The teams will play Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Kiwanis Park beginning April 18. Players must be 17 years of age or older.
The cost is $200 per team plus $10 for each non-town resident.
The men's league will have between six and 12 teams. The women's and coed leagues will have between four and eight teams.
Also, registration for adult baseball begins March 21 and will run until April 22.
The league will play games on the weekends at Christiansburg High. The league will have between four and eight teams.
The cost is $220 per team plus $10 for each non-town resident.

In Montgomery County, the registration period for youth baseball has been extended through April 5.
The county offers clinics for youths 5-6 years of age (as of Aug. 1, 1994) on Saturday mornings. The minimum number of youths for a clinic is 10; the maximum 20.
For older boys and girls, the county has several leagues: T-Ball for youths 7-8 years old; Junior League for youths 9-10 years old; and Sandlot league for youths 11-12 years of age.
Teams and clinics will be offered in each age group at Auburn High School, Shawsville Elementary, Belview Elementary, Price's Fork Elementary and Bethel Elementary.
The team placement day has been changed for April 9. Placements will be held at each location according to the following schedule: T-Ball 9-11 a.m.; Junior League 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; and Sandlot League 1-3 p.m.
The cost is $15 per participant.
Also, businesses and persons are needed to sponsor youth baseball. For more information, call TIM COONEY, supervisor of athletics, at 382-6975.
Meanwhile, youth basketball is also on tap in the county as registration continues through March 31 for a pair of tournaments.
On April 2, there will be a One-on-One competition at 9 a.m. and Foul Shooting contest at noon at Christiansburg Middle School. The tournaments will be divided into in two age groups: 13-and-under and 14-17.
The cost is $15 per person per tournament. No registrations will be accepted at the tournaments.
If you want to learn how to play tennis or golf, the county also has a program for you.
Tennis lesson registration continues through April 4. The lessons will be held on Saturday mornings from April 9 to May 14 at all four county high schools (Auburn, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Shawsville).
The cost is $15 for youth classes, which will be held at 10-11 a.m., and $20 for adult classes which will run from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.
Golf lessons sign-ups run until April 1. The classes will be at Cox's Driving Range in Blacksburg and will be offered for three successive weeks on both a Monday-Wednesday and a Tuesday-Thursday cycle beginning the week of April 10.
Youth classes are at 6 p.m. and cost $15. Adult classes are at 7 p.m. and cost $20. Also, participants will purchase range ball for each class at a discount.
The clinics must have at least six participants to be held and there is a maximum class size of 12.
Finally, two new sports are being offered by the county.
Modified fast pitch softball leagues for men and women are being formed. The leagues will follow ASA rules.
Registration runs through March 31. The cost is $220 per team. There is a maximum of eight teams per league.
And sand volleyball matches will be held beginning in May at Montgomery County Park. There will leagues for two-person and four-person teams.
Registration ends March 31. The cost is $85 per team.

PUMP YOU UP THIS WEEK: The 1994 U.S. Open Collegiate Body Building Championship and Blacksburg Body Building Classic is Saturday at Blacksburg High School.
The pre-judging is at noon with the finals at 6:30 p.m.
Admission is $5 to the pre-judging and $10 ($7 for students) to the finals.
