SEMINAR ADDRESSES DECISIONS OF TERMINAL PATIENTS

Scientific advances that help prolong life or painlessly end it have created troubling ethical, religious, legal and political concerns. Many of these issues, like the role of government, individual control over life decisions, and advances in medical treatment, will be addressed at the "QUALITY OF LIFE AT THE END OF LIFE" seminar on March 24.

Fifty minute sessions on Ethical, Legal, Medical, Religious, and Sociological Perspectives will be presented in the morning. Afternoon discussion groups include Public Policy Options, The Hospice Option, Cross-Cultural Views of Death and Dying, and Women Caught in the Middle.

The one-day event will take place at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Preregistration is not required, but recommended. For more information, call 231-5182.

In an effort to create a SENIOR PROGRAM IN BLACKSBURG, senior residents are being asked to submit activity preferences to the Recreation Department, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Possible interest groups include: short trips (one day); long trips (overnight); golf; tennis; lunch; coffee brunch; exercise; tea dances; ceramics; bridge; discussion group; movies; swimming; walking; pot luck suppers; dine out.

Day and time preferences should be submitted with activity information.

Funds have been requested for a half-time senior recreation program coordinator.

The Blacksburg Retired Citizens group is planning a TRIP TO CHARLESTON AND SAVANNAH, April 11-15.

Registration deadline for being eligible to win a medal in the New River Valley SENIOR OLYMPICS in April is Tuesday. Bridge, canasta, rook and bowling events will take place on April 18. Walking, horseshoes, croquet, checkers, frisbee, jump rope, basketball, shotput, discus, riflery, casting and softball hit and throw competition is scheduled for April 19.

The Radford Senior Center is taking reservations for a WATERCOLOR CLASS for adult beginners. The class will be taught by Radford artist Lyndall Mason, and will meet on Mondays, April 4, 11, 18, 25 and May 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the senior center, 27 First St.

Interested persons must registration at the Radford Recreation Department, 29 First St., by March 28. Cost is $35, and checks should be made payable to the Radford Senior Center.

The Christiansburg morning group is going to Heritage Hall at 10 a.m. today for a friendly visit. The afternoon group will also go to Heritage Hall at 1 p.m.

The Blacksburg group will go to Brookmeade at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday March 17.

The Shawsville group will go to the SHARE warehouse on Monday . at 10 a.m

On Tuesday, the Warm Hearth group will go to SHARE at 10 a.m., and the McCoy group at 2 p.m.

The Radford chapter of the American Association for Retired Persons will have a potluck dinner at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Service meeting on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. will address home safety on March 17 and medications on March 24.

Senior identification cards will be made March 24 between 10 a.m. and noon. Persons 60 and older who would like a card must bring proof of age and Social Security card. The ID card can be used at participating merchants to obtain discounts and other services and may be used as a form of identification. A $1.50 donation helps defray costs.

The Dine Round Club will dine around next on March 23 at 12:30 p.m.

The CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St., 382-8173:

A flower pot class will be held today from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $3 plus supplies.

A trip to the General Store in Buena Vista has been re-scheduled for Friday. Van leaves the National Guard Armory at 8:30 a.m. Transportation fee is $4.

The trip to the Highland Maple Festival in Monterey, Va., will be Saturday. The van will depart from the National Guard Armory at 7 a.m. Transportation fee is $5.
